Headaches......ouch!

topic posted Mon, January 14, 2008 - 12:32 PM by  Lady jess, W...
My goal this year is to compete in Figure for 45+ and Tall and Over All! I have upped my work time and weights and reps. I have been doing pretty good for the past month. But, the last 3 days when I finish a set, I get a pounding or pressure headache. It goes away in about 3 min, but comes back after the set. I am breathing correctly and I do not drink coffee. ( I was told once that drinking coffee brought this on, I stopped and the pain went away) but now it is terrible.

Any ideas or help here?

Check your blood pressure, maybe it reacts too quickly when you do that.

A little off topic, but I'm wondering if anyone has noticed blood pressure differences when it's very cold. Lately when I do aerial rope and go upside down and then right myself on the coldest days I get slightly dizzy. I have low blood pressure. It's started happening when I climb the trapeze ladder quickly, too. Today it wasn't as cold and I didn't feel the dizziness at all. I never noticed getting dizzy, almost faint, before this winter while doing aerials. It's been colder than usual in the gym this winter. Could very cold weather affect one's blood pressure?

Not that significantly if you're active. Check your circulation. I did and turns out I have a weak one.

Hmm, maybe mine's a little weak, too. The faint feeling could possibly be triggered by the extreme cold temps affecting my circulation more so in my case because I have an under active thyroid (hypothyroidism). Maybe I need to get my blood tested again. I'll wait to see if the dizzy/faint feeling comes back again on an especially cold day. The last few days I haven't noticed it.

Read an article along this topic in the May 08 FitnessRx magazine
Performing heavy weights can peg the blood pressure for a brief period and places great stress on blood vessels, a Canadian study measuring blood pressure as high as 480/350 during the short period of performing. This causes our arteries bulge naturally. If the bulge in your cranial arteries is significant enough, you can get headaches the way you described. But this should only happen the first few times and then your body adjusts. If it keeps happening try lowering the weight and see if these headaches continue.

Another study, done in Japan, suggested that doing as little as 15 minutes of moderate cardio after weight training mitigates almost all the negative effects weight training has on our blood vessels. Don't know if you are doing that already, if not try that and see if it helps.

      Thank you Don.

My doc and I were going through my supplements when he found in bold lettering at the very bottom of a bottle stating:

"Immediately discontinue if you experience rapid heart beat, dizziness, SEVERE HEADACHES or shortness of breath." I said I did remember reading that along time ago but forgot...I think he was going to smack me. I stopped taking it and the headaches durning work outs slowly faded away. We did not find what chemical in the supplement that was causing the problem.
